AI Knows You, exhibit at the curiocity Science Center in Freising

How does artificial intelligence assess you?

An AI system analyzes your face and estimates your age, mood, and other characteristics. Discover how modern image recognition works and where its limits lie.

The Science Behind It

The software identifies a face based on typical features such as the eyes, nose, mouth, and their arrangement. It compares these features with a database of more than 30,000 images. The result is the closest match, or the most likely classification. The calculation runs locally on a computer; your data is not stored or shared. Recognition accuracy depends heavily on the conditions: good lighting produces sharper images, a shorter distance captures more detail, and a smile significantly changes facial features. The result can therefore change noticeably. The hobby assigned to you, however, is chosen at random. This shows that such systems do not “know” everything and sometimes simply make assumptions. Interestingly, both our brains and software sometimes recognize faces where there are none, for example in everyday objects. This phenomenon is called pareidolia. The exhibit shows how AI recognizes patterns—and where its limits lie. Does AI know you?
