Mirror Patterns
What happens when an original and its reflection meet?
Place different patterned discs in front of the mirror. The reflections create new symmetrical shapes and ornaments.
The Science Behind It
The mirror shows the disc a second time as a reflected image. Because the original and its reflection meet directly, your eyes immediately combine them into a new overall shape. Half a pattern can suddenly become a circle, a star, or a completely new figure. The mirror acts like an axis of symmetry: everything on one side appears again on the other, reflected. Moving the disc changes the position of the original and its reflection relative to each other, creating new patterns. This exhibit shows how strongly reflections influence our perception of shape and order.
