Rotating Mirrors, exhibit at the curiocity Science Center in Freising

Why does your reflection suddenly look “the right way around”?

Two mirrors create an unusual reflection that no longer appears reversed left to right. At the same time, your reflection rotates twice as fast as the mirror itself.

The Science Behind It

Two mirrors work together here, positioned at a right angle to each other. A single mirror reverses front and back, which makes it look as if left and right have been swapped. Combining two reflections cancels out this effect, so your image appears “the right way around.” Something else happens when the mirrors rotate: the two reflections amplify the movement, turning one rotation of the mirrors into a double rotation of your reflection.
