Overhang, exhibit at the curiocity Science Center in Freising

What’s the best way to cross a gorge?

Use nine wooden blocks to build a bridge that projects outward as far as possible. You’ll learn how the center of gravity and weight distribution make stable structures possible.

The Science Behind It

Mathematically, the first suggested arrangement follows what is known as the harmonic series. In other words, looking from the top down, each block can project a little farther forward than the one beneath it: first half a block-length, then a third, a quarter, a fifth, and so on. With enough building blocks, the bridge can quickly become a strikingly tall tower.
