The Science Behind It

Pi (π) is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, and it is an irrational number: its decimal digits never end and never repeat in a fixed pattern. This makes it a popular example of how unpredictable—and yet precisely calculable—some mathematical constants can be, even though pi is found in every circle, no matter how small.
