Leonardo Bridge, self-supporting wooden structure in the Science Center

Can you build a bridge using only wood?

Build a sturdy bridge using only wooden planks. Discover how the pieces support one another to create a load-bearing structure without screws or glue.

The Science Behind It

The principle is based on a design by Leonardo da Vinci: an arch bridge that remains stable through compressive forces and the way its components wedge against one another. The more weight the bridge carries, the more firmly the pieces press together. This construction principle is still used in emergency and temporary bridges because they can be assembled and dismantled quickly.
